Fifteen local athletes seeded in top eight for OFSAA track and field

Eight Kingston-area athletes and one of its relay teams are seeded in the top three of their respective events for the 64th Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations track and field championships this week in Oshawa.
One of the athletes, Sydenham's Wade Embury, posted the fastest time in the province among athletes in senior boys 200 metres at last week's regional qualifying meets, and therefore enters the competition seeded first.
He's also the No. 2 seed in senior boys 400 metres, where he won the bronze medal last year, and he's a member of the Sydenham 1,600-metre relay team that goes into the meet as the No. 3 seed.
In all, 49 local athletes from 15 schools will contest 47 different individual events and two relays at the three-day meet. Fifteen of them have been seeded in the top eight of their respective events.
Seedings are based solely on athletes' performances at regional qualifying meets last week. They're used to assign lanes in heats on the track and determine the order of competition for field events. The performance list was released this morning.
The only other athlete from a Kingston-area school to have a No. 1 seed is junior Cole Norton of Prince Edward in Picton. A gold medalist last year in long jump, he's the top seed in the 100 metres and the No. 3 seed in the 200 metres.
Besides Embury, two other local athletes go into the meet as the second seed in their respective events: Hailey Wolfgram of Regiopolis Notre Dame in midget girls shot put, and Heather Jaros of La Salle.
Jaros is the second seed in both the junior girls 800 and 1,500 metres, though it's likely the seeding in the latter has been compromised by a typo: The No. 1 seed, Ikram El Gana of Bill Crothers in Toronto, is listed with a seed time of 2 minutes 48.70 seconds, more than a minute faster than the existing women's world record in the event, 3:50.46, which has stood for almost 20 years.
Branna MacDougall of Regi and Nicole Zohorsky are seeded third in their midget girls events, the 1,500 metres and 80-metre hurdles, respectively.
Seeded fourth are Jay Dearborn of Sydenham (senior boys javelin), Jonah Johnson of Holy Cross (junior boys shot put) and Cameron Linscott of Kingston (midget boys 3,000 metres).
Nicole Armstrong, a three-time OFSAA medalist over 400 and 800 metres, is the fifth seed in senior girls 1,500 metres. Drew Marquette of Queen Elizabeth, who has improved his performance by almost a metre and a half over the last three weeks en route to winning his event three meets in a row, is ranked fifth in midget boys shot put.
Ben Workman of KC is seeded seventh in junior boys 3,000 metres and eighth in the 1,500 metres.
KASSAA's athletes with a disability are also seeded favourably - Sydenham's Shirley Hughes is ranked third in open girls ID 100 metres, while Garrett Thompson of Sydenham and Danny Amaral of Regi are seeded third and fifth, respectively, in the boys ID 100 metres.
The three-day meet begins Thursday at the Oshawa Civic Recreation Complex on Thornton Road.
