Posted: June 7th, 2013 @ 10:12pm
After winning three games in a row at the provincial high school girls soccer championship, the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers were eliminated in the quarter-finals Friday evening at Windsor.
Blessed Trinity of Grimsby prevailed 2-1, winning on penalty kicks after the teams remained tied 1-1 after regulation time and overtime.
Kaitlyn Balfour scored a second-half goal for Regi, the Kingston Area and Eastern Ontario champion that was unseeded going into the 20-team Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA tournament. The goal erased a 1-0 halftime deficit.
Blessed Trinity, the 20-team's seventh seed, was unbeaten in four preliminary games. It will play a semifinal match Saturday morning.
Regi dropped its first game at the three-day event, 5-0 to Belle River, Thursday morning but the Panthers responded with three straight victories to emerge from their pool with a quarter-final berth. Friday morning, Balfour scored in the first half and the Panthers' defence made it good for a 1-0 win over Loyola of Mississauga in Regi's final preliminary contest.
