Wade Embury happy with second bronze medal

By CLAUDE SCILLEYOSHAWA - He had the fastest seed time going into the meet, and the fastest qualifying time in Thursday's heats. Wade Embury had already won an OFSAA bronze medal and in his third year of senior competition, he had designs on winning a championship.When it didn't happen in the 400-metre final Friday afternoon, the body language immediately after the race suggested the talented Sydenham runner was bitterly disappointed with winning the bronze medal - again."It's not exactly what I wanted but I'm happy with it," he said later. "You can't be unhappy with getting on the podium. It was still a good race."Embury crossed the line in 48.12 seconds, a personal-best time but 34 one-hundredths of a second behind race winner Joshua Cunningham of Markham Brother Andre."You can't complain about a personal best. I came out and had a good a time, ran a good race. I can't complain."Embury made up the stagger on his nearest opponent by the first turn and going into the final 100 metres he was part of a three-man cluster at the front of the pack. "When we came off the turn we were all pretty even, which is the way I wanted it to be," Embury said. "I just thought I'd have the biggest kick. I didn't today, but it was still a really close race at the end."Embury kept to his normal pre-race routine Friday, one that, based on experience, demands solitude before the race."I keep to myself," he said. "Usually I try not to talk to anybody. Put on my music - try and get in my zone as much as possible."It lets me concentrate a little better. I find if I start talking to people I don't concentrate on what I need to do on the track. At the beginning of the season my times weren't that great and I think that's because I didn't concentrate enough."Today, the past few races, I sat down by myself, ran my race over in my head, and it helped. All my PBs have come that way."Friday's medal was Embury's third at OFSAA. Today he will try for a fourth with teammates Ben Trickey, Jay Dearborn and Eamon Hillis in the open boys 1,600-metre relay. Sydenham won its heat night and had the second-fastest time in qualifying, a season-best 3 minutes 22.25 seconds.
