Kings travel to Whitby for only game this week

Posted: June 11th, 2013 @ 6:23pm

Kingston Kings will hit the road for their only Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League game this week, Thursday night in Whitby.

The game will be a match of teams with strong motivation. The Kings will be looking to avenge a 12-11 loss at home to the Warriors May 16, a game Kingston led 9-6 late in the second period. Whitby will be smarting from a weekend where it lost two of three games in a three-day tour of eastern Ontario. After beating Gloucester 20-4 Friday night, the Warriors were edged 6-5 in Cornwall Saturday night before bowing 12-4 in Brockville Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors have fallen to 2-5-1, four points behind the Kings, who are in third place, three points behind second-place Cornwall.

The previous meeting between the two teams was an entertaining affair at Centre 70, where Whitby took first-period leads of 3-0 and 4-1 before the Kings roared back to take a 9-6 lead with less than five minutes to go in the second period. With Zack Lysyk scoring three times in four minutes, the Warriors went ahead 11-9 before Kingston's Zach Masterson scored a pair of unassisted goals 46 seconds apart to tie the game at 16:28 of the third period.

Connor van Ryn scored his fifth goal of the game at 17:58 and it proved to be the winner in the only game the Warriors have won this year against anyone but winless Gloucester.

Except for its two wins, the Warriors have struggled to score goals, with just 28 in their other six games.

Kingston, 4-4-1, has lost just one of its last five games since the loss to Whitby.

Kyle Aylesworth continues to lead the Kings in scoring, with 28 points in nine games, fourth best in the league. He shares the league lead with 18 goals with Jarret Pitt of Brockville.

Last Tuesday at Gloucester, Aylesworth moved into eighth place in the list of Kingston junior career scoring leaders. He now has 112 points lifetime, four more than Brian Leishman. Next in sight is Sandy McDermid, who had 124 points in two seasons with the Kings, 1973 and 1975.

Kingston's Haneh Brant is having a career season. He's tied for sixth place in league scoring with 26 points - as many as he had in two-plus seasons with the Kingston juniors - and he's tied for second in the league with 16 goals.

Two other Kings are prominent among the league leaders. Josh Smith's five-point performance against Brockville last week has him 13th among league scoring leaders with 24 points and his 14 goals has him tied for fifth. With 17 assists, Jay Waller is tied for third in that department.
